One of the issues that has opened up public discussion about LGBT rights has been the effort to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS among men who have sex with other men, but who do not necessarily identify as being gay or bisexual. UNAIDS official reports suggest that they are targeting night truck drivers who are known for having sex with younger men.
The AIDS pandemic first arose in Pakistan in 1987, and government reports estimate (as of 2004) that nearly 3,000 Pakistanis were living with the syndrome, although several critics believe that the Government is underestimating the problem. It is believed that the number may have risen to somewhere between 70,000 and 80,000 people, and possibly as high as 210,000 (as in the UNAIDS Pakistan reports)

ZERO AIDS-RELATED DEATHS
More than 62,000* (UNAIDS Report, 2017 Data) people lost their lives from AIDS-related illnesses across the country in 2016. This is more than just a number. It’s a significant loss to society. Access to vital care and treatment can end AIDS-related deaths, unfortunately, more than 50% of people living with HIV are not on treatment.

ZERO NEW HIV INFECTIONS
An estimated 80,000 new cases were and was diagnosed with HIV in 2016, including over 9,000 children under the age of 15. We aim to put an end to new HIV infections by increasing awareness and building capacities to reduce the risk of the spread of the virus.

People living with HIV are often cut off from their families and left to fend for themselves, simply because they are HIV positive and stigma associated with HIV in our society. We envision a pakistan where people living with HIV and those vulnerable to infection are able to lead healthy, stigma-free lives.

Our Approach
The SMF AIDS approaches the challenges of HIV with hope and positivity. Our aim is not just to prevent HIV from spreading, but also to ensure a healthy and dignified life for children and adults living with HIV.
Our approach is three-pronged:
PREVENT
To prevent is to reduce, to reduce is to eliminate.
Prevention is key to halting the spread of HIV. We undertake initiatives to raise awareness of HIV prevention, transmission, and treatments available. We educate people on HIV infections including co-infections with tuberculosis and hepatitis C, through health camps, sessions and training.
Our work raises awareness to reduce the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. Counselling guides vulnerable communities to understand the importance of getting tested for HIV and helps make them aware of their options for a healthy living if they test positive.
CARE
What care can do, medicines cannot.
More than anything else, people living with HIV (PLHIV) need care and support to live full lives with the virus. We help them adhere to treatment and educate them about the importance of taking medication regularly which can help them live longer healthier lives. We enable expanded access to education, nutrition and healthcare, and counsel their children, peers and parents to provide the support they need.
We also respond to emergency needs for people living with HIV, a shelter for the homeless and orphaned and access to drug treatment centres.
EMPOWER
Support once, empower for a lifetime.
One of our key objectives is to empower people living with HIV. Being HIV positive is not an end to life and all its wonderful possibilities. We facilitate training for skill building, access to funding for income generation programs helping the integration of vulnerable communities with HIV to mainstream society.
People living with HIV and those vulnerable to infection are often denied access to their legal rights. We assist them with legal release procedures and property claims. We also facilitate issuing of PAN card, voter IDs and other identity documents to enable access to government social welfare schemes.
